Yes, that really is an Autozam AZ-1! I didn’t know what to expect from Japanese Day at the Larz Anderson Museum, but I was pleasantly surprised. The cars, for the most part, would inevitably be less expensive than their $100,000+ German Day counterparts. But would they be less interesting? Of course not! Sure, there were the usual suspects - Z cars, Civics, Subarus, etc. But there were also 6-7 NSXs at the show, including this one, which had an NSX-R wing/intake. Is it genuine?

Kinja'd!!!

I snapped this ipotato shot as the car was leaving. No DSLR shots here; I didn’t plan on attending the show, so it was at home. Whoops...

Kinja'd!!!

A Subaru 360! Sandwiched by two other quirky vintage econoboxes. I love the massive rear window on the yellow Honda. The thick trim piece surrounding the glass makes it look like a cartoon car.

Kinja'd!!!

An R34 V-spec II Nürburgring edition. Yet another incredible car I did not expect to see - how did the owner import this?! I wonder if he drives it around? If this is a real one, I wouldn’t risk it. Track days only until 2027. This is the final edition of the R34, released in 2002, which makes it 1/750.

Kinja'd!!!

There was a bike section too. This race moto weighs 200 LBS and has 100 horsepower. What a ridiculous power-to-weight ratio...

Kinja'd!!!

As usual, the streets surrounding the show were full of interesting rides, like this vintage honda moped. An Elite 125, apparently. The styling is pure 80s - futuristic hyperbole at every angle. Extra vents, extra slats, extra polygons, everywhere! The speedo and tach were great too. Just two squares with big blue dividers slashing the spaces in half at a random angle.

Kinja'd!!!

This RX-7 Should have been in the show! It was incredibly clean, as you can see. These are already hard to find in this condition, I bet they will be surprisingly pricey in 5-10 years, along with all the other classic 90s Japanese turbo coupes - 3000GT VR-4s, 300ZX TTs, Supras, and of course Skylines too.

This guy drove his snarling V8 Hot rod to the show. I’m not a big fan of the matte black on black look, but it sounded great! The Larz Anderson Museum’s lawn events always deliver. This old Cadillac was parked at the Museum too:

Kinja'd!!!

So, was this trip worth it? Definitely. I’ll be attending more of these lawn events next season. For now? Winter is coming, so “car season” is over in New England. I need to move to Arizona.

Matt Farah said that he went to look at an R33 in California. It had been titled as a ‘Nissani’ and had a 17 digit vin plate. So, there are shady ways to get these things in, but I would never tie so much money up into one. Especially a limited run like the Nur. Can you imagine being the guy that reduces the number to 749 (I know there are already less than 750) because you’re an idiot who tries to exploit the system?

Also, you should wonder how they got the AZ1 as well, since it wasn’t produced until 1992.

Yeah maybe it was imported through Canada or something, though IDK if the R34 was ever sold there either? I think you can disassemble them and ship them as “kit cars,” so maybe that’s what happened here. Or it was imported for track/autoX only use, which I believe is legal if you don’t drive it on the street. There were a few trailers around, and this may have been on one of them.

Good point. I hadn’t considered that - this could have been trailered here, I guess?

This + the Autozam were just too good to believe.

That’s what the Nissani thing is, a ‘kit car’. You piece them out and put them in several crates. It’ll work at the state level for sure, and you’ll get it through customs, but if the feds ever start poking around you’ll be screwed.

That AZ-1 is spectacular. As is the NSX. As is the RX-7 that was not in the show. As is the Subaru. Let’s be honest, the whole thing is pretty spectacular.

Yeah I’m sure the Feds wouldn’t be pleased. That’s always a stupid line to cross!

I love the Larz Anderson shows. They are all great! I went to one C&C there this year, all I had time for.

Yeah I didn’t go to as many as I wanted to either, but they never disappoint! I’ve never been to a C&C there though, I’ll have to check one out next season

This must be James May’s most hated car: a brash, youngster’s tuner car with a Nurburgring special edition.

I, on the other hand, love it, now that I know that there is a Nurburgring edition. What did the V-Spec and Nurburgring edition have over the regular car (and the regular V-Spec vs. Nur edition)? More power?

I wanted to go to this last week (my buddy volunteers there) but I just didn’t have the time. Too much stuff going on -_-

European motorcycle day was cool despite the weather. I’ll have to try to go to more of these.

This was imported through blah-blah-low-production-show-blah-blah law of some sort. I know because there is an R33 V-Spec in my town, completely legal.
